hotels

Well, someone has endless amounts of money. The legendary Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel is now designing his own island – Isla Moda – in the United Arab Emirates. Yes, not the hotel on the island, but the island itself. Crazy, I know.

Lagerfeld will be working in collaboration with Miami-based architecture firm Oppenheimer and the Kor Hotel Group to design this 1.2 million square foot island, topped off with some over-the-top buildings. You know, like the cherry on top!

Isla Moda, which Spanish speakers and most romance languages will recognize as meaning Fashion Island, will have 150 residential units (probably condos or townhomes), three luxury hotels, spas, lounges, and PLENTY of chic boutiques. Like any of us are surprised.

Due to be completed by 2014, it is said that Isla Moda is inspired by the floating palaces of India and cruise ships. It sounds like this undertaking will be a traveling fashionista’s dream come true. With every last minute detail designed by Karl himself, I know the fashion world will be expecting a lot!

Here are some of the artist renderings of the new island. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling a bit of the “Biodome” theme going on. (Did I just date myself by remembering that movie?!?)

What do you think of this crazy new project? Are you a fan of what it looks to have in store? Leave your thoughts below!

How fun is this?! The world-renowned Plaza Hotel in New York City, just announced the debut of the new Eloise Suite designed by Betsey Johnson. I love her stuff, so this is really exciting!

Here is more of what they have to say below:

The Plaza Hotel is rawther thrilled to announce the launch of the one-of-a-kind Eloise Suite, designed by celebrated fashion designer Betsey Johnson. Channeling the ebullient spirit of The Plaza’s most famous “resident,” Eloise, the irreverent and irrepressible fictional heroine of Kay Thompson’s classic book who skibbled her way into the hearts of generations of readers, Johnson has designed an exclusive Eloise Suite that blends luxury and whimsy for a charmingly original result.

As is only fitting for New York’s quintessential “city child,” Eloise’s suite is located on the 18th floor and is comprised of two rooms – one for erstwhile young Eloises and one for their parents – resplendently rendered in an Eloise-approved palette of pink and black. Décor highlights include: a signature Plaza chandelier fitted with pink, candy striped wall panels outlined with gold leaf molding, a white zebra-print carpet, a King-size bed made up with custom-designed bedding depicting images of Eloise, a sparkly padded pink headboard and nearby ottoman, and Eloise’s name scrawled in neon lights affixed to the wall above. The suite is also equipped with original Hilary Knight prints adorning the walls, a disposable Eloise camera so that guests may snap photos of their stay, a wall-mounted flat screen TV and DVD player, Eloise DVDs and books, a tea set and Eloise and Weenie dolls, Eloise robes and towels.

The Eloise Experience:

Upon arrival, a dedicated Eloise Ambassador will escort guests to the Suite where they may sign the official guest book and have their photo taken. The photo will be framed and given to the guest as a memento of the experience at turndown.

Rates for the Eloise Suite start at $1125 a night and include a monogrammed Eloise bathrobe, a $100 gift card to the Eloise shop, an Eloise camera, a framed photo of the guest inside the suite and an Eloise book. An additional set of components is available for $140.00. Guests also have the option to book an adjoining ‘grown-up’ Edwardian Suite, which includes both champagne and truffles. Rates start at $2350 a night for this two-bedroom option. A one night non-refundable deposit is due at time of booking

For more information, please visit theplaza.com or fairmont.com/theplaza. The Plaza has appointed a dedicated Eloise Ambassador to assist guests in booking a stay in the Eloise Suite. Please contact the Eloise Ambassador directly at eloiseattheplaza@fairmont.com and 646-599-8365.

If any of you are lucky enough to book this room, or ever sneak peeks at pictures, you better contact me so we can post them up!

Travel Review – Hotel Raffaello, Chicago

by Kirsten on September 27, 2010

Boutique hotels continue to be one of my favorite places to stay when traveling. Their smaller size enables them to really pay attention to the details in their design, customer services, and amenities. When I last visited Chicago, this was the second of two places I stayed. (You can check out my review of the Dana Hotel and Spa here.)

Hotel Raffaello sits on a side street off of the Magnificent Mile, the luxury shopping mecca of Chicago. A perfect location to access all parts of the city. When booking the trip, I had come across a great deal on the Voyage Prive website (yes, I do use these sites, and they are fantastic, AND everything they crack up to be!), and booked immediately.

Upon arriving to our hotel, (we walked there, but tons of public transportation is available), we instantly liked how quiet the street was. Shocking for being in a big city, right?! It’s funny how just a few blocks off the main street can make such a big impact in terms of street noise. We noticed the older brick building on the corner of E. Delaware and N. Seneca streets. Immediately you can see that this building is older, thankfully not an older dilapidated building, but an older, clean, beautiful building!

Ideally situated next to the Hancock Building, yes that’s one of the REALLY tall ones in Chicago, it’s charm makes it a unique and comfortable place to stay. Unfortunately I did not get a great exterior shot, so I had to use this one from the web instead. Thankfully, it gives you a great idea of how the building looks!

Upon entering the building, their lobby is small, yet feels spacious. They have done well with the space they have, and their interior design is fresh, clean, and modestly luxurious. Their front desk for check in threw me off a bit, as its just a small desk at the back of the room, somewhat nondescript, and if no one was standing there, you may be confused as to where to go next.

Our room was a Deluxe Suite, so not the regular run-of-the-mill room, and I was eager to see what it had to offer. On this particular trip, I chose not to contact the staff ahead of time to alert them of my arrival. Not that I am a VIP, but at times I like to arrange a tour of the building ahead of time, with a sneak peek of the various room categories. In order to get a very clear understanding of how the hotel is run, their hospitality, and their rooms, I do like to come unannounced, and that was precisely what I did on this occasion.

We took the elevator up to one of their upper floors and arrived at our room. The elevator was small and older, but something to be expected in an older building such as this. Our room was tucked away at the end of a long hallway, and upon opening the door, I felt a bit mixed on the room. It was large in size, had a separate living area from the bedroom and bathroom, but definitely felt old. They had done some remodeling and upgrading, which was very obvious and appreciated, but there was a darkness to the room that I didn’t like so much. I am very sensitive to the light in an area, so the darkness may not be of issue to most, and perhaps it was the particular location of our room. I instantly turned on all the lights in the room, and already I felt a ton better.

As you can see, the darkness shines through a bit in these photos. I didn’t do any editing with these, so you can see them at their organic state.

The bedroom had a wonderful king size bed that was uber-comfortable. I’m talking about the, don’t want to get out of bed, cozy all day, sort of bed. Big fan. I also liked looking out the bedroom window to the other older brick buildings. I felt so city-girl, considering I am so used to staring at trees and grass outside my home windows. How boring!

The bathroom was smaller, but I did appreciate having an outside sitting area to apply make-up or work on my hair. This bathroom definitely only fits one person at a time, and you can tell that it’s an older room with newer amenities. That was just fine and dandy with me!

On our last night there, when the thunder storms were at their peak, and our energy level was at its low, we decided to order in a good ol’ fashioned Chicago-style pizza. A quick call to the front desk and they had the local pizza delivery menus available to pick from. The fact that I got suckered into watching Jersey Shore for the first time that night is not my finest moment. And, I just may deny it if you quote me on it!

Overall, I would stay here again. The rate was very reasonable, the location was ideal, and it did carry a great old world charm to it. They also have a restaurant on site, but I tend to avoid eating at my hotel’s restaurant when I am traveling, as I feel like I have so much to explore, and never enough time. Would I recommend you to stay here? Yes! Don’t get too caught up on the older rooms, as it definitely feels clean, comfortable, and upgraded. The intricate ceilings, windows, and details of the older style was kept, but they managed to upgrade it to modern comfort. I appreciate that, and if you do too, you’ll be a fan of Hotel Raffaello in Chicago.

Another major designer has put her mark on the luxury hotel scene in designing 20 rooms for Claridge’s Hotel in London. Diane von Furstenberg, “the queen of print” and known for her iconic wrap dress, may not stay longer than three days at a time at any hotel, but her jetsetting ways and life of fashion has aptly prepared her for one of her most unique projects we have seen lately. The first interior design feat for DVF launched this last June, and was very well received for both her and this legendary London landmark.

DVF has long been a frequent visitor of the five-star hotel – over 30 years to be exact – and is one of her all-time favorite hotels when she is not off to more exotic locales such as Vanuatu or Abu Dhabi. And not unlike her own iconic fashion designs, she had her hand in everything – from the paint, to the furniture, to the art – in all the new hotel rooms. Some rooms even carry her own signed personal photos from her travels.

With gorgeous details depicting styles of Italy and the Middle East, as well as colorful Chinese floral patterns and animal prints, the rooms are breathtakingly glamourous and chic, and we would expect no less from the fashion icon.

Claridge’s provides a bit more information:

Breathing new life into a series of rooms, junior suites and the third floor piano suite whilst retaining the very best of the original features, von Furstenberg has created bespoke fabrics and furniture with her iconic prints and bold colours. As an ardent traveller herself she has apporached the project from the guest’s perspective first and as a designer second, with an instinctive understanding of what will satisfy not only men and women but also their families.

Speaking of her care and consideration for the history of such an iconic hotel she said, “I wanted to respect the architecture and the formality of the grand hotel room, but at the same time make it relevant to today’s lifestyle… I don’t want the hotel to change, I just want it to be more of a fantasy.”

The Piano Suite (shown above) in which she collaborated with her long-time friend and interior decorator Olivier Gelbsmann, comes with personal butler service, one or two bedrooms, (each with it’s own marble bathroom), large wardrobes, a marble fireplace and a spacious sitting room with enough space for a bar and a grand piano. With vibrant prints, glasswork from Murano, handcrafted items from Bali, and handcrafted rugs, the room is simply gorgeous.

Her other amazing guestrooms showcase gorgeous handcrafted rugs and luxurious interior décor accents that were handcrafted in Bali. Well equipped with king-sized beds, plasma TV’s, and custom cashmere blankets. The marble bathrooms include Asprey toiletries and plush bathrobes designed by DVF herself!

For those wanting to take their own piece of DVF home with them, the window dressings, inset wall coverings and upholstery are from DVF’s exclusive home line which will be available to consumers in September.

What do you think of her new hotel room design? If money were no object, could you see yourself there?

Best New Designer Hotels Round-up

by Kirsten on July 13, 2010

I am excited to offer you a guest post from the fabulous Isabel over at Travel Intelligence. She was kind enough to offer her expertise in an area we all love, designer hotels! Read below about the best new designer hotels that she thinks we all should know about!

Best New Designer Hotels Round-up… from Luxury Hotel Specialists Travel Intelligence

It’s been a good year for fashion/hotel collaborations. Between Diane Von Furstenberg’s twenty new suites at London’s Claridge’s and the fashionista-dedicated Fashion 26 in New York, we’ve a whole lot of shiny new places to stay to put on our wishlists… and that’s just the start of it. Design houses have got in on the act too, with some super-stylish openings for their own new hotels in the past year. Here’s a few of our favourites…

Hotel Missoni, Edinburgh

Missoni’s first hotel opening just off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile generated much fanfare – and its praises are still being sung ten months on. With black and white decor punctuated with dramatic prints, it’s as smart and jazzy as fans of the label might hope for. Italian restaurant Cucina collaborates Rosita Missoni’s design with chef Giorgio Locatelli’s foodie know-how, and rooms are a well-coordinated mix of Missoni patterns. Best of all – as hotels so often skimp on this area of design – bright bathrooms will make you smile even on the rainiest of Edinburgh mornings.

Future openings: Kuwait, Oman, Brazil, Cape Town.

Armani Hotel DubaiArmani Dubai

Residence in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, is the first sign Armani’s bling factor is alive and well at its inaugural hotel. Gold and silver interiors are the second. Exercise your spending power with raids on Armani’s three hotel shops, paying special attention to The Galleria’s select edit of clothes and accessories from Armani Prive. Elsewhere, you can dine in style at one of eight restaurants and lounge your days away at Armani/Spa. Rooms are kitted out in Armani Casa furnishing, which you’d be tempted to take away – if only you could fit an oak table in your bag.

Future openings: Milan, Marrakech, Marassi, London, New York, Shanghai, Tokyo.

Maison Moschino, Milan

Moschino brings its tongue-in-cheek style to a 19th-century railway station in the centre of Milan. Here, you can share a bed with a floral-print wolf (in the Little Red Riding Hood room), check in to the Sweet Room to sleep under a cake-and-biscuit ornamented chandelier or luxuriate in a rose-petal appliqué bed (courtesy of the Life is a Bed of Roses room). Fairytale sleeping quarters are matched with artful public areas: lights in the lobby are fashioned like Moschino dresses and seats at Chlandestino Moschino restaurant ‘wear’ Moschino designs. It’s all like a very good fashion dream.

Fashion 26 Bar New York CityApril announced the opening of Fashion 26, a Wyndham Hotel in the heart of the Garment District in New York City, just a block away from the Fashion Institute of Technology. This opening did not go off without a hitch, unfortunately. With their official opening pushed back numerous times, people began to wonder if there was going to be some major problems with the hotel, service-oriented, with amenities, or the like. Luckily for Fashion 26, their opening was well-received and I hear their amenity cupcakes are to die for (each arriving guest supposedly receives one)! I love cupcakes. They are little bites of goodness. Sigh.

From the hotel:
One of New York City’s newest hotels, the Wyndham New York Chelsea offers stunning design, meticulous service, and four-star amenities. Located on West 26th Street in one of Manhattan’s most remarkable neighborhoods, the Wyndham Hotel Chelsea is steps away from the Fashion Institute of Technology, The Empire State Building, Herald Square and the renowned Macy’s flagship, and of course, the food and shopping of Chelsea.

Maison MoschinoAnother fashion hotel to add to the list, is the Maison Moschino in Milan, Italy.  Italy’s style capital gets its first hotel from a fashion house in their busy Corso Como neighborhood. Moschino is known for having a whimsical approach to their fashion, and this hotel is no different. With ballgown-style beds, rooms designed with candy in mind, it all is very “Alice in Wonderland” in its feel.

Here is some information provided by the hotel:

The hotel is located in the old neoclassical railway station on Viale Monte Grappa, 12, that opened in 1840 for the Milan-Monza route. The hotel’s creative direction is led by Rossella Jardini and Moschino’s creative team.

Berlin Welcomes the Soho House

by Kirsten on May 12, 2010

Berlin Soho HouseTalk about a controversial site to house a beautiful hotel! Berlin’s Soho House conjures up stories of Nazi and Communist regimes, both once being housed by this exact building. Looking at the gorgeous pictures, one would never know of the history behind this international outpost.

Over the last thirteen years, this building remained empty, but come this last Monday, the Berlin Soho House had its official grand opening (they had a “soft-opening” over the last couple weeks).

This particular Soho House is the largest of its international counterparts, with over 860,000 square feet, and eight floors. This members-only hotel-club-spa-restaurant has 40 individually designed bedrooms, and although it has a bit of a complicated and sad history, they believe that the time spent in the beautifying and renovating of this structure will provide a good time for all of its guests.

Armani Hotel DubaiGiorgio Armani introduced a new chapter to his life venturing into the hospitality industry with the grand opening of the Armani Hotel in Dubai. Despite the recent economic downturn and debt problems Dubai has been faced with, Giorgio Armani SpA and Emaar Properties continued the hotel development with optimism. This is the first hotel Armani has stamped with his signature name, and plans to expand his empire with multiple other properties and residency developments throughout other major key cities across the globe. Women’s Wear Daily provided a full article on the opening of his hotel, and the pictures are simply beautiful.

“The idea is that you should feel as if you are coming to my home,” said Giorgio Armani.

Is it OK to Steal From Hotels?

by Kirsten on April 14, 2010

Hotel AmenitiesOk, I am guilty. I take things from my hotel room now and then. Shoot me.

From the cute little toiletries in the bathroom, to stationary, bathrobes, towels, laundry bags, slippers, coffee mugs, and in some cases, linens, hotel-provided amenities go missing all the time. In all honesty, I have no problem taking the cute little lotions or sewing kits. Usually I hate the shampoo and conditioner they have to offer, so I just leave those behind. (I blame my ridiculously thick, wavy hair.) But, I have never even once thought about throwing a duvet cover in my suitcase, let alone a set of sheets. But, others sure have.
