Wow. Time sure does fly, doesnt’ it?!

by Kirsten on August 4, 2011

Don't forget to stop and take a breather....

I know, I know. I am totally fired. It has been over a month – heck, almost a month and a half – from my last post. Life has been crazy busy for me – between work, personal stuff, more work, more personal stuff. I wish I had some fun stories to tell you about all the fabulous traveling I have done, or the amazing clothes I have been buying (well, I did find some *AMAZING* finds at TJ Maxx and Marshalls lately), but the reality is that my summer has consisted of a big move into a new home, work, and not a lot of play.

I definitely plan to fix this situation, and get a better balance going on, but it is what it is, and I see lots of amazing change on the horizon. More about that later!

I promise to do a better job of updating the site, and apologize for the lack of quality posts lately. And as an FYI – that stupid budget that was passed in CA on July 1, limiting affiliate earnings for taxing online e-tailers (blah, blah, blah), NOT a fan. So, I am working out that whole thing as well. (Want to know more, Google it and you’ll see my frustration as a blogger).

Thanks for your patience. You are all amazing readers, and I value each and every one of you!

xoxo, K.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

by Kirsten on December 25, 2010

It’s a special time of year, no matter what holiday you celebrate. In my home, it’s Christmas, and I’d like to take the time to say thank you to all of you. You all mean so much to me, and knowing that you come back time and time again to read up on the latest in fashion and travel – well,  it really warms my heart.

I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year. You all deserve nothing but the best in life, and if you haven’t treated yourself to a little something special – whether it be something fun and fashionable or a journey to a new destination – I hope you take the time to appreciate YOU. Life can be so difficult at times, full of ups and downs, twists and turns. At the end of the day, you are your own best friend – and you deserve to treat yourself like one.

Lifestyle Goal-setting: Is it time for change?

by Kirsten on September 29, 2010

Every now and then I think it’s a good practice to take a close look at our lives, take a mental snapshot, and compare it to our goals and aspirations. Are we meeting our goals? Are we actively achieving them? Are we standing in our own way?

It’s easy to get caught up in life’s everyday challenges. You know, bills, work, family, errands, all very time-consuming, frustrating jobs at times. Perhaps you set a goal a while back to lost 5-10 lbs, finally schedule that vacation with your significant other or family, enroll in yoga, take a creative writing course, walk the dog every morning and night, whatever the case may be, it was important enough to set the goal. Time passes all too fast, and before you know it days, months, and years pass and our goals seem to often slip through our fingers.

That being said, it’s important to allow yourself to actively work towards the things you have always wanted. The process of setting and reaching goals provides you with a sense of accomplishment, a “pat on the back” you could say. Nothing is more important than creating your own happiness. This happiness will translate across all mediums of life, from your work, to your family, to your friendships.

Here are some tools that will help you along your path:

  1. If you can see it and believe it, you will achieve it. Visualization – imagine yourself taking that vacation, the way it feels, how the air smells, the adventures you will embark on. Each detail you can visualize helps manifest the reality.
  2. Research – spend some time on the Internet or in your local library. We often forget how great books are when we can hold them and smell them. Before I start planning my next trip, I will often head to the library to check out books on regions of interest. It really helps get me excited and aids in the visualization process.
  3. Enlist the help of others – Sometimes those closest to us may not be the best for this. Does this mean they don’t support you? Absolutely not! Often it can just be a matter of needing a fresh conversation, someone to bounce ideas off of, brainstorm, and create. Sometimes spending a bit on a professional will ensure that you stick with your goal setting plans, helping you get there every step of the way.
  4. Be kind to yourself – Don’t be too hard on yourself. Fall off the wagon now and then? No biggie, we are only human! Get back on the horse and ride again. One set back does not mean you are failing. Laugh at yourself, step back into your plan, and move forward.

I would love to help each and every one of you meet the goals that you dream of. I have helped a variety of people along the way, from quick email conversations to phone calls, scheduled virtual meetings to in person coffee-shop meetings. Whether it’s planning your first trip ever, to arranging for your first international trip. Recreating your wardrobe for a new job, or organizing what you currently have to purge and bring in a few key pieces. I also may not talk about it a ton, but I also have a background in health and fitness. This includes finding ways to lose a few lbs, to finding the motivation to start an exercise program that fits your activity level, time available, and interests.

Nevertheless, do not ever hesitate to contact me! Some things I do for a small fee, but so much of it I do for free! I see it as my way of giving back. Send me an email and let’s talk about your goals, and I’ll help you reach them! Simple as that!

Traveling in Chicago

by Kirsten on July 22, 2010

Hey Everyone! I know it’s been a couple days since I last posted, so I wanted to give you a quick update. On Tuesday I arrived into the wonderful city of Chicago and will be staying through Sunday! It has been such a wonderful experience thus far and you can be sure to expect two great hotel reviews as well as a bunch of other great tidbits of info from their public transportation system to the shopping on Magnificent Mile.

Until then, I will be posting some things here and there, but you will hear a lot more from me upon my return!

In the meantime, let me know if there is anything specific you want to know about this great city, and leave a comment below!

So for everyone that saw my rambling yesterday about where D. and I were headed for the rest of our night, we decided to just jump in the car and go. Heading south on 101 in Northern California, we drove until we got our of our regular surroundings. I think one of the reasons why I like doing this is that it takes us out of the house, we get to talk and talk, listen to great music, and see things we never have seen before. Or, perhaps we see something again, but that we loved in the past. This time we ended up in Monterey, and took a bit of a different route, through downtown Salinas.

Salinas is an area of California that most would never visit, it has a lot of farming, open space (unheard of for most of California), and not a whole lot else. What was really funny, and I wish I had pulled over to get a picture of it, was these HUGE cut-outs that they had in the fields depicted the hard-working migrant workers. I thought it was such a wonderful idea, paying homage to the many workers that keep California’s farming industry successful, we really have no idea how hard they work. The cut-outs, which were enormous, was a great reminder of their contribution to our state.

As we neared the coast the temperature dropped. Not a shock, as for those that live in California, we know that if it’s warmer inland, it very possibly can be cold on the coast, it’s that lovely blanket of fog, our natural air-conditioning. The temperature fell about 15 degrees, pretty common, but D. had on a pair of shorts, and I was in sandals. Goes to show that sometimes planning where you want to go ahead of time, can be really helpful. Oh well, onward we go!

Off Again – Road Trip to Nowhere?

by Kirsten on May 15, 2010

Road Trip GirlOk, you are starting to probably think I have something totally wrong with me. I think I have a problem. It is Saturday, we have some free time ahead of us before Monday looms on the horizon, and we are itching to go somewhere. I asked D. this morning what we should do today, and we came up with nothing. The usual. So, no sooner then just an hour or two later, we are walking out the door to go “somewhere”. Not sure where yet, but I will keep you all posted! I am not sure if our bank can take an overnight somewhere, but we do have that $75 dollar gift card we never used in Hawaii. Well, I guess we shall see what becomes of this! I am totally taking you through my thought processes now, not because I am mental, but because I think it’s a fun idea for a weekend that has no plans in it. Bring your camera, a change of clothes, and keep extra toiletries in your trunk like I do!

What are you doing this weekend? Any ideas on what you think we should do or what type of road trip adventure we should have? I know you all don’t live in California, so be general, that works too!

Road Trips – Last Minute Travel Ideas

by Kirsten on May 8, 2010

Road Trip NapaRoad Trip!  For some reason whenever I see/hear that phrase, it makes me want to yell it out like I am in some weird early 90′s movie. Don’t quite know why, but that’s the case. This weekend D. and I were not interested in hanging around the house  so we decided to find somewhere to go last minute. We definitely don’t have the funds to be traveling far or take any plane flights, and considering we just got back from Hawaii five days ago, it’s probably a bit nutty to be feeling this way already. But, this is the case with me (and now us), as I am always looking for a new adventure and trip to go on. Finding an excuse to travel should be a specialty of mine.  So this is the deal, we don’t want to spend more than $100 (give or take), we have a dog we can’t leave behind at home all alone, we have to be home by Sunday morning for Mother’s Day brunch with my beautiful mom, grandparents, and other family, and we want to go somewhere new (or at least somewhere we haven’t been together). Sounds a bit limiting, right? Well, it’s not, not at all.

When I got home from work today, I started doing a little bit of research. Research and I go hand in hand. It’s part of my nature and need to learn and experience more, always continually educating myself. Either that, or its the control-freak in me. Whatever, I say it’s because I am educating myself, it sounds better.  I had an idea of how far we could drive, no more than about four hours out, which would give us about a four hour drive home. We wanted a beautiful area to drive through, as the drive is part of the adventure. Luckily, living in the Bay Area in California allows us so many gorgeous areas to visit, it is not a tough task to undertake. We always plan to stop along the way, finding cute or fun eats for cheap, places to take beautiful pictures, and anything else that we desire.  In the end, we decided upon Napa Valley, wine country.

Tropical Flight HawaiiWell, I must really love you guys. It’s 12:40 am PST and I am due to get up in five hours. Yikes! Before I head to bed, I wanted to make sure I kept my word on posting a few pics of my travel packing. This five-day trip is to Hawaii, for those who have not paid any attention lately, and the goal is to never check a bag. Once again, mission accomplished. I will admit that going to a warm location makes this mission much easier!

I started off by picking out my clothes. I brought three pairs of shorts, three pairs of capris (one pair of my oh so favorite Current Elliott boyfriend jeans), two skirts, and four dresses (and I always make sure the dresses can be dressed up for nights out). I then also packed five tank tops, three bathing suits (w/ interchangeable tops and bottoms), one black wrap, and one sarong.  I did not bring any long-sleeved items, and should I get cold, the wrap will be perfect. Note that I love jersey knits (a lot of what you see here is definitely that material) and solid colors! This definitely helps mix and match.

Why I Travel (And Do So In Style!)

by Kirsten on April 23, 2010

St. Croix

On the Beach in St. Croix

“Certainly, travel is more than a seeing of the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”

I figured it is time for more of a personal post, for you to get the chance to know me a little bit better. Besides, you may visit my site on a daily basis (at least I hope so!),  and ought to know what brings me to participate in all of this crazy blogging madness. Travel became a part of my life at a young age, probably around 7 to be exact. My family would travel every other year or so to some faraway destination. Part of the reason we did this, was to visit my maternal grandparents and extended family in Norway. While we were there, we usually would visit the surrounding countries as well. (Always a smart idea when you have jumped across the pond.) It was just lil ol’ me, and my mom and dad. Yep, I am an only child. And no, I am not weird, or selfish, or whatever other stigmas go along with being an only child. I definitely was not spoiled, but I consider myself blessed. Blessed to be able to travel. Around the time I was an early teen, family stuff changed and my traveling became less. Nevertheless, I had the bug. I think it is deep-rooted in my genetics. I am serious, our family has a weird addiction to travel. No matter how much money we make (or don’t make), we find a way to travel the world. I’d like to believe it’s because my wonderful grandparents started it all – beginning with their immigration to the US.

Calling all traveling fashionistas…..

by Kirsten on March 21, 2010

I am someone that has a true penchant for travel and fashion (ok, so maybe it’s a slight addiction).  I love the feeling of visiting a new place, experiencing a new culture, and wrapping myself up in the adventure and exploration of a foreign land (and looking cute while doing it, of course!).  If I was asked to either give up traveling or my love of fashion, I would laugh and subsequently tell you that I could never choose.  There is absolutely no reason to not have a vacation in your future and amazing clothes in your closet!  I have been forced to be inventive and downright crafty in my quest of adventure and luxury as I, like many of you, just don’t have the deep pockets to afford these finer things in life.

I am here to bring you insight and direction as to how anyone (yes, YOU) can join the ranks of our fellow traveling fashionistas. I promise that with my help, we will find a way to make it affordable. So go on, indulge yourself.

With reviews on both fashion and travel I will also include:

  • style advice (because what fun is it to have clothes we hate and don’t feel proud to wear, ummmm, none)
  • travel suggestions (it is time to get out and explore our beautiful world!)
  • sizing recommendations (nothing more annoying than trying to purchase an item online for a ridiculously good price and subsequently find out your regular size doesn’t apply!)
  • international fashion trends (ever wonder what other people from other cities and countries of the world are wearing?  Do you want to bring some items on your upcoming trip that are currently popular in the town/country you’re visiting? YES!)
  • sales and discounts (Everyone – sample sales are your friend.  Discount codes, promo codes….we got them!)
  • travel lists (I admit that I may have a bit of an OCD personality when it comes to lists and organizing.  I understand we are all not like this, so I am sharing.  Win-win!)
  • must-have fashion and travel items (enough said.)
  • dream vacations (because we all have to strive for something)
  • personal anecdotes (for some reason my life can be quite entertaining to those not living it.  You’ll get to hear a lot of the daily junk that wanders through my mind.  Should it become annoying, just tell me to stop.)

I chose to embark on this journey as I have a firm belief that you should do what you love.   Should you need my help with planning, advice, or just to bounce an idea off of, I am a great listener, and an even better researcher.  I will find what you are looking for.  I enjoy the challenge as bizarre as that may sound, and I would love to save you buckets of money. Should you want to hear about anything in particular, just ask.  You can reach me at kirsten@travelingfashionista.com

Love, K.
