Never one to shy away from researching my next travel destination, I look forward to learning all about the hottest places to visit, where to shop, where to stay, what to eat, etc. LUXE City Guides provides a very unique, witty, and fun read in every single  one of their travel destination guides. Completely entertaining, I found myself laughing out loud numerous times.

Small and compact,  these babies pack a punch.

Take a quick read from LUXE City Guides’ website, you’ll see why I adore them:

Hello, gorgeous…

For seven years LUXE City Guides has quietly changed the face of travel guides, starting from scratch we re-thought the whole concept of why and how we all travel, of what we need when we get there and most importantly, what we don’t. LUXE is now famous for its super-svelte format, and its take no prisoners attitude, avoiding all the padding, photos, graphics and blah of other guides and getting straight to the meat. The result – ultra-smart travel companions stacked with priceless information for the discerning, value-conscious and busy traveller.

In the notoriously fickle worlds of fashion, food and entertainment other guides are hopelessly out of date even by the time they reach the bookstore shelf. LUXE City Guides are not only updated each year, but come with monthly online updates. So by the time you get to your destination, all you need do is relax, because if it’s not in LUXE, you’re not missing anything. Hyper-opinionated, irreverent, bright and fun to read, whether you have a few hours or a few days, LUXE really is all you need. Oh, and you’ll never hear us refer to our readers as tourists. With LUXE you’re a visitor. It’s a big difference.

LUXE City Guides. Fasten your seatbelt.

With 31 cities in their range covering Asia, America and Europe, each guide is updated yearly with new editions, so you know you are getting the latest and greatest juicy tidbits of info!

To add a cherry on top, they now also offer mobile guides. Yes – they really are a force to be reckoned with.

Want to avoid the touristy celeb-spotting sites and dine where the city’s stylish residents really hang out in Los Angeles? Want perfect cocktails in funky speakeasies in New York? Or perhaps you want to be personally guided through Barcelona’s famous Gaudi architecture by an expert? LUXE City Guides Mobile has got it covered.

With 20 destinations to choose from, they are available for a multitude of handsets including the iPhone, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson, Nokia and HTC. Additionally, each comes with a year of free updates sent directly to your mobile. A self-updating guide? I know – how easy and simple can they make it?

One of my other favorite offerings are their travel box sets. Totally customizable, you can choose the color of the box, and which of the 31 titles you want to include in it! I have to admit that I love the look of the box set so much, I would love to just put it on my shelf to admire.

With four different colors and sizes to choose from, these boxes are a perfect gift for the jet-setter in your life. Or, you can treat yourself – like I want to do!

Check out www.luxecityguides.com for more information, as well as get a closer look at all their amazing offerings!

It’s the perfect time of year to curl up with a good book, so it’s my pleasure to introduce you to a great read that is not only fun, but vastly informative for my fellow fashionistas!

CityStyle – A Field Guide to Global Fashion Capitals provides an insiders look to eight of the world’s most fashionable and chic cities. For women who live and breathe fashion and travel, this guide is a must-have for your library. Get the low-down on the great cities of New York, Paris, Milan, London, Tokyo, Stockholm, Sydney, and LA, all in one handy little book.

Never again will you feel lost in finding the hottest locations to shop; whether it be amazing boutiques, vintage finds, or high-end department stores. This book provides the best of the best in fashion research. In addition, there are great interviews with top designers, bloggers, photographers, and other industry experts that all answer the burning question: what makes each city uniquely stylish?

Immediately I was drawn in by the street style photos, giving an insider’s glimpse to each city’s own unique, contemporary styles. In the eight chapters curated by local fashion experts, you can immerse yourself in the most amazing fashion meccas of the world. The layout of the book is awesome – complete with color photos of shops, hip neighborhoods, hot hangouts, and required reading for each city.

Don’t miss the bonus behind-the-scenes info on Copenhagen, Antwerp, Brooklyn and Melbourne!

I do wish that the book covered a few more cities, perhaps those that are not always obvious – but definitely carry their own in the fashion world. San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago, and more. The list could go and on! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for another version highlighting the lesser known, but equally fabulous, fashion-centric cities!

If you pick up a copy in the next four days, you can take 20% off at Borders.com with coupon code “BKP5677C”!!

Book Review: Based on Availability by Alix Strauss

by Kirsten on September 30, 2010

I had the pleasure of being sent a copy of Alix Strauss’ latest book, Based on Availability, for review. An intricately woven story of the lives of eight women that pass through the famous doors of the Four Seasons Hotel in Manhattan, I devoured the book in just a few short nights.

Strauss has the ability to capture the lives of these women in a way that makes you feel like you are a friend to each of them. Whether it’s learning how to deal with loneliness, the excitement of a first date, frustrations of a mother-daughter relationship, the perils of drug addiction, dealing with OCD, or the long-lasting periods of grief after the loss of a loved one, each story interconnects beautifully.

Like Struass, I have long had a love-affair with hotels. The art of hospitality is something that so often is dismissed, an afterthought only when we have had superb or perhaps horrible service. We never think of the lives and stories that go into each hotel stay, from the management to the housecleaning – a hotel never goes to sleep.

The Manhattan Four Seasons is an iconic hotel that many only dream of staying at. This book gives you the chance to peak into the lives of those that not only work there, but also the guests that may only stay one night, or those that have come year after year since childhood. Exciting and deep, Strauss captivates her audience throughout every page.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a new author, new fiction novel, or escape from reality. A perfect book for a plane ride, vacation read, or perhaps as an introduction to the world of hospitality – you won’t be disappointed.

Pick up “Based on Availability” by Alix Strauss here from Borders.com!

Delivering Happiness book freeI was lucky enough to be given an advanced copy of the new book, Delivering Happiness, written by the Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh. I am always trying to find new books that promote positivity and new perspectives, and this book fit the bill perfectly. Tony provides a fresh new take on corporate life, and how it doesn’t need to follow the norm. He takes the Zappos brand and makes it into everything he wants it to be. It really is beyond impressive. Often books about work can be insanely boring, but this kept my attention through and through. He has a great writing style, one that makes you realize that he is no different than you and I, and although his story is of success, it makes you walk away from the book feeling like anything is possible.

Join the giveaway and get your free copy of Delivering Happiness after the jump!

I cannot wait for warm weather. The dawn of spring always sends this fashion lover straight into overdrive. I earnestly begin looking for the perfect outfit, one that symbolizes that summer is finally approaching. I like to find a mix of items that will work across multiple outfits, and the ones below definitely accomplish that. Pair this with some chunky jewelry, like a long pendant necklace or a cuff bracelet!

Madewell Beach Ruffle Camisole – $80
Joes Jeans Roll Short – $150
Chinese Laundry Lucky Strike – $90
Nine West – Karina Small Crossbody $59

I want to note that this outfit is in no means “cheap”. But, like I mentioned, this is me, searching for the type of outfit I would love to have. I have faith that all of these items will drop in price (with the exception of the purse, which is already on sale).  And when they do, I will share it with you! In the meantime, these trends are big right now. You will find similar pieces in stores everywhere, so that’s the good news!

For spring/summer 2010, look for floral blouses, boyfriend shorts, pastels, vintage style camisoles, lace-up heeled sandals, and cross-body purses. Don’t forget to put a pop of color in your outfit, maybe a bright tunic with a lighter denim! You will be seeing a lot more of these types of posts, with suggestions on how to embrace the newest trends for the season. Some days it will be at full price, other days will be big bargains. Let me know what you want to see and it will help shape this site in the direction you want it to go!

Much love, K.

10 Pieces Every Woman Should Own

by Kirsten on March 31, 2010

I love InStyle Magazine. They have great features such as this one I am about to share with you. There are certain staples of a wardrobe that every woman must have. Most of these items can be dressed up or down, which makes them completely multi-functional. These are the perfect type of items to bring when traveling. Remember – less is more! There is no need to pack four suitcases when you can easily make-do with just one and have plenty of options to choose from. I promise.

  1. The Little Black Dress

Little Black Dress

Casual Couture by Green Envelope – $89.10 (Retail – $168)

All women need a little black dress to wear for an evening out. It works for so many different functions, whether a date, a reunion, or a cocktail party. Finding a dress with a bit of embellishment, such as this one-shoulder detail, gives the dress a bit more style. Look for one that fits your body type really well, it will make or break the outfit.

2.  Oversized Watch

Michael Kors Gold Runway Watch with Glitz – $169.99 (Retail – $250)

I love the look of wearing a watch that could be for a man. Wear it loosely as you would a bracelet, it makes a gorgeous accessory. This particular watch is on my radar!

3.  Red Flats

Ciao Bella Red Flat

Ciao Bella Pause Leather Cut Out Flat – $49.95 (Retail – $80)

I have featured these before on a previous post, and just love them. Flats are a must-have shoe for every woman, and although black seems to be the go-to color, a red flat gives you that pop of color. They work for every season and look way cute with a striped tee.

4.  Striped Shirt

Michael Stars Striped Tank

Michael Stars Riviera Striped Scoop Neck Tank – $49.00

There are tons of shirts out there featuring nautical stripes. I really happen to love this particular style, so although it is not on sale, it also doesn’t completely break the bank. Do a quick search for striped tee and you will have tons of options to choose from. Wear with a cute pair of jeans (I’d pick skinnies) and your red flats. This trend is big for 2010.

5.  Printed scarf

Made of Me Patchwork Scarf – $38

Scarves are one of the greatest ways to accessorize your outfit. Pick a bright colorful print to add a dash of color or look for an animal print such as a leopard or zebra pattern. I am a firm believer that you can never have too many scarves! These ones from Nordstroms are a great price for the quality.

6.  Black Blazer

Black Blazer

Express Studio Stretch One Button Jacket – $98 (Shop Mondays and use promo code 4199 from $15 off)

A tailored black blazer is a must for every woman. Perfect for work, with a pair of jeans, little dresses, trousers, skirts, it’s great on all body types. Make sure to look for one that fits you well and accentuates your waist. As InStyle says, you don’t want it to look like it’s swallowing you!

7.  Statement Necklace

Statement Chain Necklace

Statement Chain Necklace from The Limited – $39.50

A statement necklace is a great way to play with the basics in your closet. I tend to have a lot of basic items and dress them up, whether it be with jewelry or scarves. This necklace not only accomplishes that, but it also pairs the mixed metal look which is very in right now. A simple way to make an outfit look feminine and strong.  At under $40, it’s a great find.

8.  Classic Trench Coat

Calvin Klein Classic Black Trenchcoat

Calvin Klein Belted Trench – $128

I love my black trench coat. It truly is a timeless classic that is perfect for work, for play, or for dress. It is a sexy coat that when fits you well, gives your body a beautiful shape. I agree with InStyle, that this is an investment piece. Burberry is known for their trench, but at over $1,000, it is out of my price range (one day it won’t be!). I bought my trench for just over $100 and totally love it. The key is to look for a classic A-line silhouette that cinches at your waist line. Don’t be afraid to try a few on to find your perfect fit. Remember, we all have totally different body styles! Find what works for you.

9.  A Perfect Flared Jean

Hudson Flare Jean

Hudson Stretch Flare Jean in Natural Indigo – $71.99 (Retail $176)

A flared jean fits almost all body styles. Do I believe it’s the one cut of denim all women should have? I am not sold on that idea. I’ll warn you now. I have a huge denim addiction, one that extends to all cuts and styles. (Well, not gaudy denim, I hate that.) I think every woman should have a few cuts of jeans, but that is for a whole other post. Featured above is a great stretch flare by Hudson. Darker denim does well for most people, and also can be dressed up very easily. Hudson’s have a great weight and stretch quality. Please note the price of this denim will go up by 10% tomorrow, as this reflects a promotional price on Bluefly (love them!).

10.  Black Opaque Tights

Gap Black Opaque Tights

Gap Black Opaque Tights – $12.50

InStyle said it best: A great pair of tights can make your legs look slimmer and help you get away with wearing a dress that’s a little too short. Double them up for a more opaque look—and to keep you warm in the winter!” Don’t be afraid to play a bit with tights or patterns. They can look really cute paired with the right pair of shoes, skirts, shorts, etc.

I loved that InStyle gave all these wonderful suggestions for women. What I didn’t love was that they provided no ideas or links to actually purchase the items. It left a lot to be desired. But, I love their mag so much that I forgave them. It was the least I could do to provide each of you with a buying guide. Should any of these items not work for you, or if you need help fitting your body-style, I would love to help. I have a great way of being able to provide sizing suggestions and brands for individuals that match your uniqueness. Should you need cheaper items, no problem! Want to spend a bit more… that is easy!  Just let me know – kirsten@travelingfashionista.com

DKNY Cozy – Things I Want

by Kirsten on March 30, 2010

DKNY (Donna Karan New York) has a major cult following in their versatile cozy. This piece was introduced in 2003, but has become a fashion item obsession, especially after PR powerhouse, Kelly Cutrone of People’s Revolution, got her hands on it. Last night they debuted the makings of the DKNY Cozy’s short viral film on Kelly’s show, Kell on Earth, and I can guarantee sales went up for the cozy immediately. They filmed it rogue-style and I loved every minute of it. Reminds me that I need to be directing things. Not sure what, but it’s what I am best at. “You! Go there!, You! Move faster!, Move out of the way!” Yep, definitely made for that position.

Anyways, I digress. I want one, badly. They come in a bunch of great colors, but in true Kirsten form, I really, really want the black version (not shown below, and extremely difficult to find online).  However, if you find it you can buy it for me as a present and I would love you forever and ever!

The DKNY Cozy

The cozy can be wrapped in twelve different styles and there are tons of way to learn how. Check out DKNY, the new iPhone app, or check out YouTube for plenty of videos submitted by users. You can purchase the cozy at numerous places, but I recommend shopping directly through DKNY at this link. If you join DKNY online, you get 10% off your purchase. Yay!

A few reasons why I want the cozy – I love multi-function pieces. I love anything with cashmere, or a cashmere blend. You can dress it up, or dress it down. It works with every season. It comes in a bunch of colors. And, I can wear it as my perfect traveling piece on the airplane. If you didn’t get a chance to read it already, you can see my perfect airplane outfit here. Funny how I chose this exact type of item as part of a perfect travel ensemble.

Really, I mean come on, can you really go wrong? It retails for $195, so it’s a bit pricey for me, but I can see it as one of those items I don’t mind splurging for. Or, you could be my new best friend, and get it for me! That would be awesome. PS – I am a size small. :)

Love, K.

On another note – please contact Bravo and insist on a second season of Kell on Earth. It is one of the best shows I have seen in a while. Twitter or via their website.

What to Wear While Traveling – Airplane

by Kirsten on March 25, 2010

A thought often neglected before leaving on vacation is what you plan to wear on the airplane. Plenty of times (more than I care to admit) I simply got dressed and ended up miserable on my flight due to something so simple as an outfit mis-hap. Think jeans that don’t have enough “give”, to uncomfortable shoes, to being too hot, or too cold, etc.  You catch my drift.  Take my mistakes and learn from them.

Here are some things to think about:

  1. Wear comfortable pants. There is a fine line between being too casual and comfortable. Track suits, although really comfortable, are not the most fashionable. In fact, should you hope for that accidental upgrade to business or first class, they most likely won’t pick you if you are dressed too casual. Personally, I love to wear jeans traveling, but they must have stretch! I need breathing room.
  2. Don’t wear heels. Unless you are someone that cannot fathom the thought of being without your heels, this is a disaster waiting to happen.  I learned the hard way.  Imagine me running through the airport with my luggage in tow, purse on my arm, ticket in hand, trying to make my flight on time.  It was a sprained ankle waiting to happen.  If you are like me and 90% of the time travel with a crap-load of carry-on baggage, this is an awful situation to be in. Flats or sandals are the way to go (booties could work). If you must wear heels, go with a wedge and possibly a cork wedge.  They seem to be the most forgiving for running and comfort.
  3. Layers. Layers. Layers. They are your friend! I like a tank top with a long-sleeve cardigan or jacket.  This way, if I arrive and am overheating, off goes the top layer, and instantly I feel ten degrees cooler.
  4. Wraps. I love scarves and wraps.  They  are the jack-0f-all-trades item to accessorize with. I almost always wear one traveling.  They double as a blanket if I am cold (well, the wrap does, a scarf may be too small), they look cute, and don’t take up too much space if you need to jam it in your carry-on.
  5. Belts need to come off before security. I love belts. But please don’t be that annoying person at security pissing off everyone behind you because you forgot to remove it prior to being screened. It prevents security from running quickly and efficiently. Take it off early and be ready to move. PLEASE, for my sanity!
  6. Jewelry. Leave your valuables at home. Nothing sucks more than breaking your favorite necklace or bracelet. Worse, it could fall off and you never see it again. Much worse, it could be stolen. If it means a lot to you, keep it at home. It will be waiting for you upon your return.

So, with all that, here is my suggested travel outfit:

What to wear while traveling

C&C California Drape Cardigan – $39.90 (Use Regular price $58)

Use coupon code ccmarx25 through 4/3/10 for an additional 25% off!

Victoria’s Secret Double Scoop-neck Stretch Cotton Tank – $14.50 or 2/$20

Blank NYC Pleasure Dome Stretch Skinny Jean – $39.99 (Retail $78)

Ciao Bella Pause Leather Cut Out Flat – $49.95 (Retail $80)

Total Price:  $144.34 (Retail: $230.50)

Savings: 38%  (use coupon code and it makes it 42%)

Should you have a hard time finding your size, or need some help picking a different style jean or shoe, just let me know.  I’d be happy to send you some suggestions. kirsten@travelingfashionista.com

Much love, K.

PS – Look for my post on what you should bring on the plane soon!
