How to Exercise While Traveling – Yoga-Paws

by Kirsten on October 14, 2010

To exercise while traveling is no small feat. Gathering up the motivation alone is ridiculously hard, and add on the fact that you are out of your normal routine and surroundings – you’re left to find ingenious ways of getting that extra bit of activity. So when I was sent a pair of Yoga-Paws to test out, to say I was thrilled would be a bit of an understatement.

Dubbed as the “yoga mat you wear”, Yoga-Paws are an innovative way to allow you to practice yoga, no matter where you are in the world. No longer do you need to carry with you that bulky yoga mat, with this small little package, you are good to go!

These “mini-mats” slip right on to your hands and feet, which makes them ideal for traveling fashionistas. Yep, you know who you are!

One of the reasons I connect so much with running, is that I can do it anywhere. It helps me feel more connected to the environment around me, and I am outside of the confines of a gym and small exercise room. Yoga-Paws now gives me the same gift. Whether at the beach, in the forest, on a roof-top deck, or in my hotel room, I now have the freedom to practice yoga anywhere in the world. Sure, some may argue that this has always been the case, but anyone who has tried yoga without a mat, knows how uncomfortable, slippery, and dangerous it really can be.

Yoga-Paws were originally invented back in 2003. Immediately they were met with rave reviews from the international yoga and Pilates communities, as well as the news media. To date, tens of thousands of the original Yoga-Paws have been sold worldwide to people of all walks-of-life.

As a marker of all great companies, Yoga-Paws continued their evolution to better their product by taking into consideration extensive feedback from fans and instructors for several years and investing in research and development to identify the latest state-of-the-art materials and manufacturing resources to fit the company’s growing needs. All of this has culminated in the all-new Yoga-Paws product, with a new design that builds upon the benefits of the initial product, with improvements made to every component.

Here is a bit more information about the design:

New Yoga-Paws hand units feature eco-friendly TPE material with a curved, ergonomic design and external seams, similar to driving gloves, for added comfort and mobility. The backside of the hand units are made from a breathable mesh material to allow air circulation and a Velcro closure for an adjustable fit. Between the fingers, new “safety belt” straps keep the hand in proper position within the unit. A new moisture-absorbent, towel-like lining absorbs seven times its weight in moisture, allowing the practitioner to stay locked in place, feeling dry and comfortable.

The Yoga-Paws foot unit features a heal-strap to prevent movement during practice. The top of the foot is covered in a smooth, comfortable Lycra-spandex material that adjusts to provide a close, glove-like fit for various foot sizes. A recycled natural rubber material is provided for slip control on the bottom of the foot. The material is extremely durable and holds up to the pressure and friction of even the most rigorous yoga practices.

I was truly amazed at how comfortable they were to wear. Not only comfortable, but extremely effective – they are a must-have for all travelers that are looking for new ways to exercise freely and easily at any location in the world. For many of those that practice yoga, the connection to the Earth is part of what makes it so special. Having a product that only enhances that feeling, by giving you the ability to do yoga in any outdoor environment – is amazing.

I was lucky enough to get to try their all new design, available this fall of 2010. With how compact and light-weight they are, they fit into your carry-on bag without taking up any precious space. You too will be amazed when you pick up a pair – and I doubt you will ever look at yoga the same!

Getting kinky on the airplane

by Kirsten on October 7, 2010

Ok, you dirty-minded people, it’s not what you think! Truth be told, traveling gets us kinky. Neck kinks, back kinks, spasms, sore muscles, it can be a nightmare. (I told you it wasn’t what you thought!)

Thanks to a genius product known as t spheres, this painful problem can become a lot less of an issue with a very simple fix. I know I love them, and you will too.

t spheres joins together two of the best senses – if you can even say one sense is better than another – our sense of smell and touch. These two little balls of pleasure are life-savers for all the traveling fashionistas out there. To put it simply, two small massage balls are provided in a tiny pouch and they emanate heavenly aromatherapy-infused scents. I was lucky enough to to try the “Perk Up” version which mixes grapefruit and peppermint to help you improve concentration and circulation – ideal for a long flight.

They were amazing. Instantly they relieved the pain in all those spots that you just can’t seem to reach, and even better, you don’t have to coerce someone to give you a massage – you can do it yourself!

It’s as easy a placing t spheres on the floor to give yourself a foot massage. Place it against the back of your chair or a wall to massage the kinks out of your back, or put them beneath your hips to help alleviate the pressure of sitting for such long periods of time.

I am not the only one that loves t spheres, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Brooke Shields, Rita Wilson, and many others, are huge fans. They have been featured in Lucky Magazine, Shape Magazine, Nylon Magazine, and on DailyCandy.com, amongst many others.

I won’t be traveling without these babies ever again, and you shouldn’t either. Save your self the aches and pains, and treat yourself to a bit of heaven – even if you are stuck on a plane for 10 hours. You’ll thank me – and t-spheres, later.

Traveling can wreak havoc on our bodies. We exhaust ourselves by getting a lack of sleep, have to adjust to different time zones, surround ourselves by other sick passengers, and break our daily routine. In essence, it’s a great way to break down our immune system allowing those nasty germs into our bodies, which is often why people become sick during or after traveling.

By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from getting sick while traveling!

  1. Allow yourself plenty of rest prior to your trip
Make sure the week before your departure, to allow for enough sleep and rest. Sleep is one of the best ways to boost our immune system and keep it functioning at its highest capacity.
  2.

  3. Drink a ton of water
Water is our friend. Without it we don’t live. Don’t try to be a camel and starve yourself of water. I am horrible at remembering to get my daily amount. I seem to forget, never feel thirsty, and end up suffering because I didn’t pay attention to my water intake. Staying hydrated ensures that your body filters out any nasty bugs, helps avoid headaches, and a whole other list of great benefits.
  4.

  5. Stick to a regular eating schedule
This is particularly tough when changing time-zones. It is best to acclimate your body to the new time-zone and eat when the locals eat, but this does not mean to starve yourself for hours before. Even if you are not hungry, try to find a balanced small meal to eat. A good example would be some bread, peanut butter, and a piece of fruit. A sandwich is also an excellent idea. When on a plane for hours, this is hard to control, so I suggest packing some nutritious snacks to have on hand.
  6.

  7. Wear sunscreen!
Once you have arrived at your location, make sure to apply sunscreen regularly. I have burned myself a few times because I was not used to the level of sun and UV my destination had. It was awful. To be on the safe side, over-apply sunscreen. Too much is better than not enough. It is never fun to have a horrible burn when on your dream vacation!
  8.

  9. Check if you need any special vaccines prior to departure
Prior to your departure, make sure to check with your doctor if you need to get any special vaccines or shots. Sometimes it could be a pill that they want you to take. Nevertheless, particularly with third world countries, it is a great idea to make sure you go through all the preventative measures for your health and safety prior to leaving. It could be simple, and nothing is needed!
  10.

  11. Have enough of your prescription meds ready and on hand
I almost had a huge disaster with this once. Sometimes prescriptions only come in an amount for a short period of time, shorter than the time you will be gone on vacation. Your insurance company makes exceptions for this problem, but don’t wait until the last minute to figure this out. Call your doctor a few weeks ahead of time and get this all straightened out, you’ll thank me later!
  12.

  13. Eat balanced meals
It is so difficult to eat healthy while on vacation. We all tend to want to splurge on the food items that look delicious and cater to our heart’s desires. Unfortunately, not only can we expect to gain weight, but we also can potentially make our immune system suffer. Even if we are not the healthiest eaters at home, you can expect to eat different foods, spices, and in have them prepared using different cooking methods than we are used to. Our bodies will adjust as best as they can, but it’s best to try to eat balanced, well-rounded meals. My rule of thumb is to eat one item a day that is junky or over-the-top. Like a po’ boy in New Orleans or a chocolate croissant in Paris. YUM.
  14.

  15. Vitamins and holistic approaches
I highly recommend taking vitamins while you are traveling, heck, even just in general! A great multi-vitamin, perhaps some Vitamin C, Zinc, B vitamins (great for energy) etc. Do the research first to determine what your needs are. A multi is great for everyone, but some vitamins interact differently with our bodies and prescription meds. Some people love over the counter remedies like Zicam or Emergen-C to help prevent colds or viruses, or even fight off the ones that we feel coming on!
  16.

  17. Bring over-the-counter medications
It is always good to have on hand a basic Aspirin, Tylenol, or Ibuprofin, whatever you prefer. I also recommend having a cold medicine just in case (with decongestant), as well as some motion sickness pills (Dramamine works best for me). You may not expect to use them, but it’s great to have if needed!
  18.

  19. Avoid tap water in other countries
No matter how clean the water is, our bodies are not used to their water. It carries different bacteria and can cause a lot of stomach upset if our bodies react in an unpleasant manner. Remember – this can be true of ice too. I know it’s tough to avoid it at all times, but just keep it in mind, and drink at risk. Bottled waters are always the way to go!

exercise while travelingI think I just heard a bunch of you groan out there. How to pack exercise clothes for vacation? The simple word, “exercise”, can bring a shiver to just about anyone, especially on vacation. I go through stages, sometimes I love exercising, this is usually after I got the habit going again, and other times I simply dread it.

One of the ways I make life a bit easier on my motivation levels, is to be readily prepared with some workout gear in my luggage. You don’t need much, but if you don’t have it, you are definitely not going to be exercising. If you have not yet read my post on how to exercise while on vacation, do so now. It’s a great way to learn much more fun ways to stay active and moving while traveling. (And no, I did not tell you to go to the hotel gym, that’s just awful.)

How to Exercise While on Vacation

by Kirsten on May 4, 2010

Exercise on VacationI am guilty of using the excuse of being on a vacation to not have to exercise. The funny thing is, with the amount of free time I usually have, a little bit of some activity would not be so bad, perhaps even welcomed (gasp!) with all the extra food and drinks I consume. Many people have a routine that they follow at home, and when on vacation, it all goes down the tubes. I am definitely one of those people. But I have learned that finding a few fun ways to exercise while on vacation is a great way to experience your new surroundings!

How to Fight Jet Lag

by Kirsten on April 16, 2010

Jet LagFor those that are new to traveling internationally, or perhaps a regular jet-setter, jet lag is something that can zap the life right out of you. After a long flight, most of us don’t want to miss any time when we arrive to our destination and are ready to roam the streets and begin our vacation. Even if you allow some time to take a nap, or arrived at night (just in time for bed), sleeping can be impossible. Your body is confused as to what time zone you are in, it’s light when it should be dark, or dark when it should be light, it’s painful.

There has been a ton of research in ways to combat jet lag, but these are the latest breakthroughs.
