Travel Packing Tips

Tropical Flight HawaiiWell, I must really love you guys. It’s 12:40 am PST and I am due to get up in five hours. Yikes! Before I head to bed, I wanted to make sure I kept my word on posting a few pics of my travel packing. This five-day trip is to Hawaii, for those who have not paid any attention lately, and the goal is to never check a bag. Once again, mission accomplished. I will admit that going to a warm location makes this mission much easier!

I started off by picking out my clothes. I brought three pairs of shorts, three pairs of capris (one pair of my oh so favorite Current Elliott boyfriend jeans), two skirts, and four dresses (and I always make sure the dresses can be dressed up for nights out). I then also packed five tank tops, three bathing suits (w/ interchangeable tops and bottoms), one black wrap, and one sarong.  I did not bring any long-sleeved items, and should I get cold, the wrap will be perfect. Note that I love jersey knits (a lot of what you see here is definitely that material) and solid colors! This definitely helps mix and match.

See all my pics of my travel packing for Hawaii after the jump!

Travel Sized Beauty Products

by Kirsten on April 19, 2010

Travel Sized Beauty Kit“For those who travel, those who are curious, and those who can’t commit.” Finally, a one-stop shop for getting all your beauty products in the highly coveted 3 fl. oz. size, perfect for traveling. I hate checking a bag, and one of the constant battles is figuring out how to get my favorite toiletries on board. Usually I have to go buy some small containers and transfer my products, which is really messy, time-consuming, and an all around pain in the ass. But now, there is 3floz.com!

Kate and Alexi started their company when their two, totally opposite travel styles prompted them to come up with an easy way of transporting their beauty products.

Kate wasn’t willing to give up her daily beauty regime and carried her full- sized beauty products everywhere she travelled. She couldn’t be bothered spending hours shopping multiple locations searching for the TSA approved size products. Alexi was willing to spend hours going store to store buying her beauty products in TSA approved sizes so she could carry on her luggage. In addition to her anxiety about lost luggage Alexi had a fear of commitment, so buying full sized products put her into a full panic; travel sized products were the perfect solution.

Alexi stopped shopping for her TSA approved beauty products and started using Kate’s full- sized products when they were traveling together. This did not work for two reasons- Kate HATED sharing her beauty products and Alexi was SICK of waiting for her at the airport while she checked her luggage.

Just like all great ideas born out of a larger problem, there came a fabulous solution – and they began 3floz.com. Currently they carry their own favorite brands, products they are passionate about, or products they want you to fall in love with.  But my sources tell me (shhhh!) that they will soon be offering Supergoop sunscreen!

They have both kits and individual products, and some of them are not cheap. But for many, the idea of saving the time, effort, and running around prior to your trip, makes it money well spent. If you have tried any of their brands, or perhaps their site, leave a comment and let us know what you thought!

Packing Tips from Diane von Furstenberg

by Kirsten on March 30, 2010

Diane von FurstenbergEverybody has their own packing methods, but we all love new tips and tricks, especially with the outrageous new fees on checked baggage.  Who better than to look to DVF for her own packing tricks. As one of the most celebrated American fashion designers (best known for her wrap dress), here are her tips on packing light, how to pack couture, and her must-have clothing items while traveling.

On packing couture

“I always have the lightest suitcase.” Von Furstenberg has one trick for packing couture: “Roll up ball gowns and put them in stockings. You can actually squeeze them down to the shape of a salami. They are perfect and unwrinkled when you unpack them.”

Include a splash of color

To spruce up a pared-down wardrobe, bring bold colors and patterns, like this silk scarf. “Paying attention to small details, like a scarf or a bracelet, allows you to mix up your looks and stretch your outfits out over several days.”

Carry a big handbag

After you’ve packed everything into your carry-on, don’t forget a handbag—a great place to stash the items you’ll need on the flight. “I take vitamins and homeopathic remedies, so I have a lot of little bottles. I always put them in my large purse.”

Mix it up

Take along primary-color stripes and black-and-white geometric shapes that can easily be mixed and matched. “Before you even start packing, think of what you’ll be doing on the trip. Hang up your clothes and see how you can combine them. Then edit it down.”

Bring jersey

“This is the material that looks best after a long flight. I travel with a lot of jersey dresses. They are perfect no matter where you’re going and never wrinkle. You can dress them up or down, and that’s what you want in a travel outfit.”

I know that I always pack a ton of jersey knit materials. They are so comfortable and can be dressed up or down. Do you have any special packing tips that you would like to share? Please leave them in the comments below!

Travel List – What to Bring on the Airplane

by Kirsten on March 29, 2010

With the dawn of extraneous surcharges on flights, it has become increasingly important to pack smart. I have a tendency to go overboard in my packing, but the more I travel, the more I learn – less is more. I am proud to say that I no longer travel and check in my bags. In fact, the whole idea of waiting to check my bags, waiting to pick up my bags, the thought of my bags going missing, well, it is all too much for me.  First, I want to get off the plane and just GO. Second, I panic at the though of losing my beloved clothes. Third, I hate the thought of carting all that crap along with me. So, that leaves me with figuring out an ingenious way to pack all of my stuff solely in carry-on bags. I will make one small note – this has worked for vacations of about two weeks. Anything longer and I may consider sending a bag via check-in. Ugh, maybe not.

I am not going to cover clothing items in this list, rather the items that are necessary to have readily available with you at all times on your flight. These things should be in the bag that goes beneath the seat in front of you, or easily able to be reached in the overhead above you. All of these items will make your plane flight slightly more enjoyable and in any flight over a couple hours, we all know how important that is.

  1. Socks – many times I wear shoes that don’t require socks. When I want to try to get comfortable, taking off my shoes and putting on some socks somehow gives me the illusion of being slightly cozy. SLIGHTLY. I fly coach (unless I have enough miles to bump me up to business), so any notion of comfort is  a step in the right direction.
  2. iPod or mp3 player – Do not leave home without one. Some play movies, all play music. They help you drain out the sound around you and escape for a bit. It is also great to have your own headphones as the ones the provide on the plane are horrid. Much better to have your own that you know work.
  3. Magazines and books – another great way to pass the time. I tend to bring a few magazines and one good book. Anything more than that takes up too much space. If I finish the book or magazines, I pass them on to the flight attendants. They love this and you make some friends along the way! I can always pick up something new upon landing.
  4. Food/Snacks – this has become really important. Now that they are charging you for everything, and I really mean everything, having your own food and snacks is a lifesaver. I like items like trail mix, dark chocolate (for my sweet tooth), beef jerky, and granola or protein bars. These things don’t take up much space and are good for you.
  5. Eye pillow – Yes, sometimes I feel stupid too. But come on, who really cares. I don’t. Find a great eye pillow that fits your head and doesn’t give you headaches or too much squeeze. They are lifesavers for cutting out the lights outside your window, or from the moron in front of you who never turns his reading light off, even if it is 2:00 am.
  6. Noise canceling headset – I have yet to invest in one, otherwise I would provide you some suggestion on which one to buy, but I am on the lookout for a great deal. I know for a fact that Bose offers one considered top of the line, but I have a hard time spending that much (especially when I could get a new pair of jeans or a full outfit for that matter). I do hear these headsets are lifesavers and when I tried one on once, it was silent. No whirring of the engines, no talking, no crying, no snoring. Fabulous.
  7. Tissues – If you don’t have them you need them. Find a travel size pack and drop it in your purse or carry-on. You’ll thank me later when you are dying to blow your nose or something else equally sexy
  8. Rosebud Salve – If you didn’t read about how awesome this product is in my previous post – you can read about it here. This multi-faceted product will work as a lotion, lip balm, or even as an ointment for a dry nose, you can’t go wrong for $6.
  9. Neck pillow – These can be lifesavers in preventing that infamous tweaked neck. I like the ones that can be deflated if need be.
  10. Blanket or wrap – Like I have mentioned before, I love to wear either long cardigan or wraps as part of my airplane apparel. This is great as they double as a blanket and you don’t have to carry an additional item. Perfect since it can get chilly on the plane.
  11. Medicine – always have your basic headache med or painkiller just in case. Some people may also want to carry a decongestant. Also, don’t forget to have your daily meds handy if you are on a long flight.

I definitely am not going to spend the time telling you what not to bring as TSA does a super-awesome job at that (note sarcasm here). But should you need to know, go here. Also, make sure your toiletries (toothbrush, hairbrush, feminine products, hand sanitizer, etc) are easily available.  You may not need them, but having to hunt for them is never fun and annoying to all your neighbors.  Should you have the extra space, also think about a portable dvd player, laptop, handheld game system, or games like Sudoku or crosswords, whatever tickles your fancy. (I am a sudoku girl). Remember – there is no need to bring a dvd player and a laptop.  The laptop does both. Right? Ok, just making sure you were paying attention.

What are your favorite or must-have items for the plane? Got any tips and tricks you’d like to share?

Love, K.
